Tatiana Maslany recently cast doubt on a second season of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law during an appearance on NerdIncorrect’s Twitch show.
When asked about hopes for season 2, Maslany responded,
“I don’t think so. I think we blew our budget, and Disney was like, ‘no thanks!'”
While not an official statement, Maslany’s comments suggest a second season is unlikely. Marvel never publicly discussed a second season, though head writer Jessica Gao previously mentioned having ideas for more episodes. The first season finale left the door open for more, but Disney may have decided against additional seasons.
The high production costs of She-Hulk highlighted challenges Disney faced expanding Marvel and Star Wars to streaming TV. The extensive visual effects required for She-Hulk led to reported per-episode budgets up to $25 million per episode, taking total budget to $225 million for 9 episodes.
For a niche comedic series with modest impact, this steep price tag may not have been viable. Additionally, Marvel’s movie-focused workflows were said to be ill-suited for episodic TV, resulting in rushed and underwhelming VFX despite the budget allocated.
She-Hulk demonstrated the difficulties of scaling cinematic franchises down to TV. Its seeming cancellation reflects a shift away from high-cost streaming experiments at Disney.
After premiering 9 Marvel live-action shows in 3 years, Marvel is now focused on animation like X-Men ’97 and Eyes of Wakanda. Few live-action shows remain, with only Coven of Chaos confirmed for 2023.
Maslany joked about having “nothing going on” after She-Hulk. While the character may appear in future MCU films, Maslany is not currently working on any She-Hulk projects.
